Product ReviewsOverall Rating: tim (Hobbyist) on Monday 22 December, 2008 Product Rating: Review: the previous posts were spot on. I would only add a comment about on of their understated features. The output is clockable. You can remove and turn the output to create a better fit or help with plumbing angles. Good dependale pump.
Steven Matassa (Hobbyist) on Friday 17 October, 2008 Product Rating: Review: A very good pump, but does have some heat transfer in the sump. Also use up a considerable amount of power, but very dependable. I have several running for years with out a problem. Easy to clean
Jeremy Brown (Hobbyist) on Sunday 05 October, 2008 Product Rating: Review: I had a mag drive 12B in my sump for about a year before replacing it. This was the pump recommended to me by my local fish shop and it did well while I had it installed. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the heat generated by this thing was tremendous. I had it installed in my sump (being submersible is nice), but had to replace it for 2 reasons. The first was the heat, and the 2nd one the amount of head loss incurred by this pump. At 10ft below my tank, it was only pumping about 600gph, far below what I should have had for my tank.
Overall, this is a good pump if you have a sump under your tank and don't have a heat issue.
Rob Topping (Hobbyist) on Sunday 05 October, 2008 Product Rating: Review: Easy to install work horses, but they do suck up power. I have used mag 7-9-12-24 and 36. All in tsump. You can plumb these externally, but I had a hard time getting it leak proof, and they do generate a lot of heat. In sump this heat goies into the water and can then be used to help with tank temp saving some energy that would go to heaters. I have seen examples of the outer caseing melt in external use. My Mag 7 was the 1st pump I bought back in 1999 and is still in use today with out any issue.
well build, powerful, but do suck up energy. If looking at high flow pumps go with a reef dart. 2 reef darts use as much power as 1 mag 24!
